What to Expect From a Nutrition Exam
After a four-year degree in nutrition, you may be preparing for your nutrition exam. You might be nervous about this part of the process, especially if you haven’t passed this exam before, but there are ways to get through it easier than most. For example, nutritionists from the American Heart Association and the National Association of Schools of Nutrition have put together a complete guide to help students pass their qualifying test.
What Is Nutrition Exam?
The most important component of the nutrition exam is the core question: what is food? Based on the AHDO Guidelines for the diagnosis of overweight and obesity, which come from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, you will be asked to identify the foods that are high in fat, low in fiber, and high in sugar. These criteria are used to create a list of “nutrient-dense” foods that should be consumed daily by people of all ages, including children and adults. In addition to creating a list of nutrient-dense foods, you will also be asked to assess the glycemic index and the glycemic load, which is how much a food affects blood glucose levels. It goes without saying that you need to pay close attention to both of these questions.
Another tip from Dr. David J. Wolff, R.Ac., who wrote the book “The Nourishment Answer Book,” which helps patients with their nutrition assessments, is to remember that the person administering the test is not an expert in nutrition. The nutritionists administering the exam rely on the answers you provide. “The big mistake that nutritionists make is to ask patients what they think they want to eat,” says Dr. Wolff. Instead, the nutritionist asks the patient to describe what they have eaten in the past and to recall the food they ate after that.
As a result, patients usually exaggerate the amount of food they consume and underestimate the amount of food they need. This makes it difficult to correctly calculate the caloric intake, which is necessary to calculate nutrient requirements. To make matters worse, Dr. Wise advises patients to keep all records, even those that don’t apply to their particular case. “The more information you can gather, the better able you will be to answer the questions on the exam,” he says.
How To Pass Nutrition Final Exam?
A nutritionist is also not always an expert in chronic or developing nutrition problems. This is why many hospitals employ nutritionists as well as nurse practitioners, a doctor that specializes in treating nutritional disorders. “Raymond says you need to do some background research before taking the test,” says Dr. Pamela Woolley, editor-in-chief of “NIOSH,” which stands for National Institute of Health nutrition publication. “But if you are in a situation where you think you may have a nutrition problem, you should speak to your doctor about it.”
There are several types of Nutrition Class Studies. The first focuses on a specific condition. The second type focuses on a group of diseases or symptoms, while the last type of exam assesses a patient’s whole lifestyle and eating habits. “The best candidates are usually those who have had cases before,” says Dr. Wise. “It helps them to remember the details of the cases and gives them information about what kinds of changes to look for in the future.”
The physical exam is the part that most people dread. Nutritionists need to do a thorough examination to determine whether the patient has an iron or calcium deficiency, high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels, and the like. “The results show whether the patient is at risk for chronic or acute malnutrition,” explains Dr. Wise. “A nutritionist uses this information to decide on a treatment plan.”
In order to prepare for the exam, the nutritionist will need to know what to study before taking the exam. The National Association of Schools of Nutrition recommends taking an entire year studying about nutrition. The student should also find a reputable source of study material. The applicant must complete a training program that includes knowledge assessment and certification, in order to pass the exam.
